“Selwyn has managed to produce sincere, personal works year after year for two decades—no small feat.” — The New Yorker
In the last three years, we have grown from 25 dance education programs and 20 school partners per year to 125 programs and 60 school partners per year. In 2023-2024, Notes in Motion served 8,000 students delivering 3,000 program sessions throughout NYC. Every day, we are practicing the enormous power of dance as a healing force in our audiences, in our studios, and in our classrooms.
After 25 years as a nomadic organization, we are thrilled to announce our new home in Tribeca at 412 Broadway. The Amanda Selwyn Dance Studio will be a home for both our professional company Amanda Selwyn Dance Theatre as well as for Notes in Motion dance education programs. We will offer a variety of dance, yoga, fitness, and community programs, designed for people of all ages and abilities, including young dancers, families, college students, and emerging professionals. With our own home studio, we will be positioned to advance our cross-pollinated programs between performance, education, and community engagement. Your tax-deductible donation will support our renovation which will include sprung dance flooring, theatrical lighting, curtains, sound system, kitchenette, locker room, and storage. Please consider supporting this next chapter of our organization!
This past Season, we premiered the evening-length work Habit Formed at BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center as part of the CUNY Dance Initiative. The piece explored how habits are created and broken in our lives. These habits can manifest strength, ease, and freedom and also create limits, boundaries, and affliction. Set in a world of shifting physical structures (cages, netting, rocks), the piece traversed a spectrum of emotions from euphoria to restlessness to liberation and lingered between the comfort of routine and the desire for change. The ultimate journey of the work was a story of discernment, unpacking how we can be empowered by intentional habits and not impaired by them.
